Make Sure You Get the Right Price
With the recent slew of TV news investigations into expired sale tags and missing Balance Rewards points at Walgreens across the country—how can you be sure you’re getting the advertised price? Here are a few tips to consider for your next shopping trip:
- Check the expiration date on the sale tag. Overcharging often occurs because a sale tag has expired, yet remains on the shelf. The expiration date will generally appear in the lower right hand corner of the tag.
- Take note of what’s on sale. If you intend to purchase a few items advertised as on being on sale, or offering Balance Rewards points, try to take note of the items and savings before checkout. A quick mental tally of what you expect to pay will be helpful in determining if you were charged correctly.
- Look at your receipt. Before you leave, take a minute to double-check your receipt. If you notice you didn’t get a sale price—or Balance Rewards points—speak up and ask the cashier. It’s Walgreens’ policy to honor the posted sale tag.
Now that you know how to protect yourself against overcharging—why does it happen in the first place?
One reason may be inadequate staffing, as documented in a report released earlier this year about operational problems at Walgreens:
We believe lower overall staffing levels may be a contributing factor to Walgreen’s operational problems. The company’s staffing has not kept pace with its store growth, even as it has slowed store openings. Since 2008, Walgreen’s selling square feet have increased by 19 percent, while its staff has increased by just one percent. In the last two years Walgreen’s staff actually decreased by two percent even as selling square feet increased four percent.
The takeaway is simple: When employees are stretched too thin, oversights such as expired sale tags and missing points may be more likely to occur.
